2023 VSO Excellence Award Winner: Bryan T. Brown

Tyler’s Veteran Services Officer (VSO) Excellence Awards recognize the outstanding work VSOs provide to those who have served in our nation’s armed forces. We are thrilled to highlight Veteran Services Officer Bryan T. Brown, in Chisago County, Minnesota, who won Tyler's VSO Excellence Award for Innovative Community Support.

Recognizing the critical importance of communication and community for Chisago County veterans, Bryan created the “Veterans’ Coffee Talk” program. Twice a month, at various locations across Chisago County, Bryan brings local veterans together in a relaxed setting to keep them informed about the latest updates from the VA and forge deeper connections with their peers and the community. By inviting guest speakers with various military backgrounds, Bryan ensures these sessions are informative and create opportunities for Chisago County veterans to connect with community members and each other.

Going the Extra Mile for Homebound Veterans

Bryan’s genuine compassion and dedication to serving veterans wherever they may be are part of what make him excellent. He goes the extra mile by personally visiting homebound veterans and surviving spouses and dependents to ensure they receive the benefits they are entitled to. His proactive outreach efforts ensure that no veteran or veterans’ family is left behind, and every individual receives the support they deserve.

Building Strong Relationships for Seamless Service

Bryan's efforts extend beyond the borders of Chisago County. Not content with just benefiting his own community, his collaborative approach has strengthened working relationships with advocates throughout the VA system resulting in streamlined processes and improved access to hard-earned benefits across the region. Bryan also leverages these relationships to advocate for greater support and resources for Chisago County VSOs, exemplifying true leadership and solidarity within the community.

A Leader Who Supports His Team

In addition to his outstanding service to Chisago County veterans, Bryan supports the growth and development of his staff. Paraphrasing Wendy Kowalke, who nominated Bryan, he is “a willing reference”, providing guidance and mentorship “without frustration.” He recognizes that a well-supported staff translates to even better service for Chisago County veterans.

Bryan’s innovative approach to veteran services makes him a beacon of excellence, compassion, and dedication in the Chisago community. Congratulations to Bryan Brown for this well-deserved recognition!
