2023 VSO Excellence Award Winner: Livingston County

Tyler’s VSO Excellence Awards recognize the outstanding work VSOs provide to those who have served in our nation’s armed forces. We are thrilled to highlight the Veteran Services team of Livingston County, Michigan, which won the Awesome Organization award for their outstanding service to veterans in their community.

Dedication to Service

Growing its team to four Veteran Service Officers (VSOs), the Livingston County Veteran Services (LCVS) team was able to serve more than 4,500 veterans last year - approximately half of Livingston County’s entire veteran population.

Additionally, LCVS’s use of Tyler’s VetraSpec claims management software has enabled their VSOs to serve clients more quickly and effectively. The software’s search capabilities streamline appointment times, enable VSOs to research a veteran’s medical records quickly, and identify opportunities for support that may have otherwise been missed.

The LCVS team is on track to submit more claims and appeals this year than ever before.

Outreach and Awareness

This past year, the LCVS team attended 28 outreach events and created two new events. Among these was their first annual Veteran Resource Fair, hosted, in partnership, with the City of Howell, which provided the opportunity for 20 different service organizations to share information with local veterans. LCVS also partnered with Howell Parks and Recreation to host their first annual 9/11 Remembrance 5K Run, in which more than 200 people participated.

In addition to hosting annual events, LCVS meets with all local American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars every quarter to continue building their network and expanding awareness of available services across the county. The Certificate of Release and Discharge Information Reporting System also enables them to reach out to recently discharged veterans in Livingston County.

Expanding Support

To meet the needs of eligible veterans and their families, the LCVS team and the LCVS Veterans Committee authorized the expansion of the Veterans Relief Fund. Included in the expansion was an increased burial reimbursement, child clothing vouchers, and a partnership with Gleaners Community Food Bank. Since the expansion, LCVS is on track to provide more than $126,000 in burial benefits and more than $167,000 in relief funds this year.

Commitment to Excellence

Through Livingston County’s employee recognition program, along with the American Legion, clients frequently recognize members of the LCVS team for their exceptional and timely service and advocacy. Last year, one of their VSOs was awarded County Employee of the Quarter, while another was recognized by the American Legion as the top VSO in Michigan.

Congratulations to Livingston County Veteran Services team for their exceptional service and commitment to our veterans.
