Three Ways Tyler Honors & Empowers Law Enforcement Officers
April 25, 2023 by Lisa Sigler
The Tyler Technologies mission is to “empower the public sector to create smarter, safer, and stronger communities.” Part of how we accomplish this is through our long-standing support of the law enforcement community, which includes our relationship with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Let’s look at three ways that Tyler honors and empowers law enforcement officers, today and always.
Tyler provides the software applications law enforcement needs, at every level
As the largest software provider solely focused on the public sector, it makes sense that Tyler Technologies provides software applications for public safety organizations throughout the country. We offer software that meets the needs of every level of government, including county, local, and state police, sheriff’s offices, tribal police, transit authority police, postal police departments, and federal law enforcement organizations. Tyler has been providing law enforcement software for more than 40 years. Tyler’s software applications are compliant with state and federal reporting mandates. Configured with law enforcement and public safety agencies in mind, our applications give public safety agencies real-time information at their fingertips, comprehensive and streamlined case management, instant data sharing across disciplines and jurisdictions, and intelligence-led responses, so help arrives faster and more prepared. Our offerings span all a public safety agency’s needs, with applications including:
- Citation Management
- Computer Aided Dispatch
- Mobile Operations
- Public Safety Analytics
- Criminal Justice Information Systems
In addition, Tyler hires former dispatchers, sworn officers, fire crews, and more to help build our software applications, ensuring that the solutions used by the industry are influenced by those who know what they need to succeed in the field.
Tyler’s commitment to law enforcement is embodied in K9 Tyler
Despite being a software provider, Tyler Technologies recognizes that effective law enforcement takes more than technology. It is even more important to have dedicated, well-trained members of the team — whether human or canine. With that in mind, Tyler Technologies provided a grant to fund a K9 officer for the Cheyenne Police Department in 2017. The K9 officer is appropriately named “Tyler.”
K9 Tyler is a female Belgian Malinois who was born in Holland and then sold to K9 Working Dogs International in Kansas, which is used extensively for raising and training working dogs. She was selected to join the Cheyenne Police Department by Officer Lisa Koeppel, whose K9 partner was retiring. The grant for purchasing the K9 was funded by the Tyler Foundation, which worked with the Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to providing grants to law enforcement agencies in need of financial support to establish or maintain their K9 teams.
Since being certified in May 2019 by the Wyoming Police Service Dog Association for the detection of the odors of marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin, K9 Tyler has been instrumental in multiple large drug busts. As Officer Koeppel stated, “K9 Tyler plays an essential role in getting narcotics off the streets because of her training and her sensitive nose, which is capable of smelling items that a human could never detect.”
Tyler Technologies is proud of the work K9 Tyler is doing in her community. She is a vital component of the overall law enforcement landscape (we’ve chronicled more of her story in a series of blog posts if you’d like to learn more).
Tyler has become a sponsor of National Police Week
Supporting the public safety community means recognizing the high cost some law enforcement officers pay in service to the public. Tyler Technologies is proud to be a sponsor of this year’s National Police Week.
National Police Week has a long history. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, to recognize and honor those who have died in the line of duty. Since that time, this day of remembrance has evolved from informal memorial ceremonies to a full week of activities called National Police Week, organized by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Bill Alexander, executive director of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund recently joined the Tyler Tech Podcast to discuss the history and mission of National Police Week.
According to Mr. Alexander, National Police Week, “started out as very small informal gatherings, but over time it has become a really powerful presence, most notably in Washington, D.C. I think that's the appropriate place for it, here in the seat and heart of our national government, to help people congregate in the same place at the heart of our government to say, ‘Hey, there is a cost to maintaining our democracy,’ and again, that that cost is tragically measured in the lives of too many men and women each year.”
He noted that the events are attended by tens of thousands of people from around the country, comprising not only the family members of those who have died in the line of duty, but also coworkers and other citizens who celebrate the law enforcement profession.
“[The annual events] put in motion in a very serious, contemplative, purposeful way every single year during Police Week to remind the nation and to allow for a time and space for men and women in our profession to come together and to remember the sacrifice of too many men and women who die in the line of duty each year…. to come together, celebrate the men and women who are in this profession, talk about and remember the stories of the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice, provide space and time for some level of healing and catharsis, much of which occurs right here at our national memorial, and also allow the survivors and coworkers and the people who have an interest in all things Police Week and in our profession to come together and sort of share in that grief and at the same time the celebration of our profession. It's a very unique event.”
Tyler Honors and Empowers Law Enforcement Officers
Tyler Technologies has been partnering with law enforcement for decades, not only through our software applications, but through our support of the entire public safety community. Our participation with K9 Tyler, as well as our new sponsorship of National Police Week, are ways for us to demonstrate that we value law enforcement agencies and personnel as more than merely clients. Because of how much we honor what they do, we do our best to empower them with the best software applications we can provide.
